Annual Report 2007/08

Houghton Regis is a small town with a population of approximately 17,000 people. It lies within the district of South Bedfordshire and the county of Bedfordshire.

The beginnings of Houghton Regis date back to Roman times and this ancient past is illustrated by its name, taken from the Saxon ‘Hoe’, the spur of a hill, and ‘Tun’, a village with Regis being added in the time of Edward the Confessor when it became a royal manor.

The Houghton Regis Carnival was a terrific success – despite concerns about the weather. The event included a vast range of stalls and attractions including the street procession and it is estimated that 3,000 people attended the event throughout the day.

The winners of the procession competition were YAWN 16, followed by the Bedfordshire Pathfinders Scouts, who won £300 and £150 respectively along with trophy cups. YAWN 16, have also won the Yvonne Corkerton Memorial trophy for a year.

The planning starts here for 2009 and the date has been confirmed as Saturday 11th July, with the theme of the event set as Films and Musicals. The Carnival Working Group is also looking for new co-opted members to assist with the planning of this event and the Council would like to hear from anybody who may be interested.

The Town Council would like to thanks the following local businesses for their support this year: Hartwell plc, Nisa Local, Three Counties Training and Greenstar / Firbank.

If you are interested in participating in the Carnival celebrations, with regards to booking a stall or space in the procession for 2009, please contact Houghton Regis Town Council on 01582 708523 /708540 or please click here

Houghton Regis Town Council succeeds in gaining Quality Council Status

It is with great pleasure that the Town Council announces that it has been successful in being awarded the Quality Council status. This scheme was set up by central government to enable councils to demonstrate that they are representative, in touch with their communities, competent and capable of taking on an enhanced role in their community. It provides an assurance of quality to all those concerned with the council.

To attain Quality Status the Town Council had to demonstrate, through the production of evidence, that it met the requirements of a number different tests covering democracy, communication and accountability.

The Town Council are delighted that their hard work has been recognised and rewarded in this way.

In achieving this status there are many benefits to be gained both by the community, the town council and the principle councils of South Bedfordshire District Council and Bedfordshire County Council in terms of service delivery, access and responsiveness, partnership working and enhanced community involvement.
Looking around Houghton Regis today, there are many clues to it’s history and they way it would have looked in the days of old. There are many old buildings that have survived the test of time and still look today much as they would have done then. Many street names are also a major clue to what has been before. more ...
