Annual Report 2009/10

Houghton Regis is a small town with a population of approximately 18,000 people. It lies within the county of Bedfordshire and is goverened by the Town Council and the new Unitary Authority of Central Bedfordshire.

The beginnings of Houghton Regis date back to Roman times and this ancient past is illustrated by its name, taken from the Saxon ‘Hoe’, the spur of a hill, and ‘Tun’, a village with Regis being added in the time of Edward the Confessor when it became a royal manor.

Following the Annual Meeting on Wednesday 19th May 2010, Houghton Regis Town Council is pleased to announce that Councillor Robin Hines has been elected as the Town Mayor of Houghton Regis for 2010/11. The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Mrs Shirley Gilchrist.

During the next year, Councillor Hines will be raising funds towards ‘Help for Heroes’, Keech Hospice Care and Hospice at Home Volunteers.

The Houghton Regis Carnival was a terrific success with lots of sunshine! The event was kicked off by the colourful and energetic arrival of the Carnival procession on the Village Green. It is estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 people attended the event throughout the day.

The winners of the procession competition were Balloonies,   Donna’s Dancing School and 1st/3rd Houghton Regis Beavers and Cubs who won £150 each as joint winners. Baloonies won the Yvonne Corkerton Memorial trophy for the best float entry.

The Town Council would also like to hear from residents who are interested in becoming co-opted on to the Carnival Working Group. The Carnival Working Group meets six times a year for approx 2 hours to discuss ideas for the event. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and some time to spare on Carnival Day itself. For more details, please contact Sarah.

The Town Council and Carnival Working Group would like to thank Nisa, The Grooming Parlour, Vauxhall Heritage Centre and all our advertisers for assisting with the event.

Houghton Regis Town Council succeeds in gaining Quality Council Status

It is with great pleasure that the Town Council announces that it has been successful in being awarded the Quality Council status. This scheme was set up by central government to enable councils to demonstrate that they are representative, in touch with their communities, competent and capable of taking on an enhanced role in their community. It provides an assurance of quality to all those concerned with the council.

To attain Quality Status the Town Council had to demonstrate, through the production of evidence, that it met the requirements of a number different tests covering democracy, communication and accountability.

The Town Council are delighted that their hard work has been recognised and rewarded in this way.

In achieving this status there are many benefits to be gained both by the community, the town council and the principle councils of South Bedfordshire District Council and Bedfordshire County Council in terms of service delivery, access and responsiveness, partnership working and enhanced community involvement.
Looking around Houghton Regis today, there are many clues to it’s history and they way it would have looked in the days of old. There are many old buildings that have survived the test of time and still look today much as they would have done then. Many street names are also a major clue to what has been before. more ...
